No Zip
This was painted after someone had thrown a postcard at me and said “if you think you can paint do this one” I said “you can’t make me” but I did it under protest and put a zip where her mouth should have been, I got told off. repainted the mouth and hid her left arm out of view as a silent protest. but thats a secret.
Oil on board. brush. 73cm x 63cm incluing the frame.
I lost the sight in my left eye overnight. All was black. The next day a had the detached retinal opperation and was told not to open my gallery for some weeks. 3 days after the opp; the gallery opened I collapsed and whilst laying on the floor drew what I could see. This picture is directly inspired from that experience and sketch. Mixed media (including some 1960s red ink I re-found).
On board. Brush. 77cm x 67cm including the frame.
I spent some months living in the Satyananda Ashram( Now the Mandala Ashram) in the hills of South Wales. It was a wondereful time of finding out about friendship, solitude, the mind versus the brain, spirit, soul, body and so-on. This painting sums up my frustration of wanting to enter my private space and at the same time not being lonely. The bird like figure flying away from the cave represents the soul-searching (soul in search of). In Acrylic on canvas. Knife and brush. 80cm x 60cm.
Inspired by the woman I live with and love. Those I have ever known and all those I havn’t met yet. The black represents the unknown, that part of a woman that can never be known. The angular form her beauty in whatever shape it takes. The colour one moment loud the next deep and cool. Never boring. Acrylic on canvas. Brush. 50cm x 60cm
Swimming at midnight with friends and dressed as nature intended (sky-clad). The subtle shapes hinting at bare buttocks and strong arms pulling through the water. The Moon almost full in her reflected glory, shining moon-light onto wet bodies, bright against the black of night. Each friend moving, breathing in an unspoken rythm. Ahh! such memories. Acrylic on Canvas. Brush. 6ocm x 50cm
This work started because of a T.V. show that said the seas were over fished and polluted by mankind. So I thought “fish crucified” when the work began it took a life of it’’s own. Life began in the ocean. In Christianity life truly began with Christ Jesus. Fish crucified for cash. Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (seen falling from it’’s mouth) the coins also represent the 12 tribes. The cross represents Rome. Fish keep life sustained. Jesus words sustain humanity. The net traps fish. Jesus made his diciples ”the fishers of men” The Net represents also him being denied 3 times. The blue background is representing the ”womb & vulva” the powerful story of the conception and birth. The light into the world and the sun disc represents the ”Son of the Father” I am told that the fish was the first symbol used by the early Christians(?) I have found meditating on this work opens up the emotions and sense of purpose. Acrylic on canvas. Brush. 50cm x 60cm
ADAM and EVE. A material view of creation
I was brought up to study as many ‘Holy Books’ as possible. North, South, East, West. Where ever they come from. The ‘Adam & Eve’ story could be based on a true material situation. We have come from somewhere so why not? But the Holy Bible has said in Genesis 1, (I have also done a work on this) that mankind was formed spiritualy in God’s likeness. In Geneses 2 we read that mankind comes materialy from Adam and Eve. I cannot capture the powerful effect of this work with the camera. Acrylic on canvas. Brush. 80cm x 60cm
